A delightful autumn dessert featuring baked apples topped with a crunchy oat topping and drizzled with rich salted caramel.
Ingredients
Scale:
6 cups of peeled and sliced apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free substitute)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (or plant-based butter)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1/2 cup heavy cream (or coconut cream)
1 teaspoon sea salt
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Toss until the apples are well coated and evenly distribute in a 9x13 inch baking dish.
In another bowl, prepare the crisp topping by mixing the oats, flour, brown sugar, softened butter, salt, and cinnamon until crumbly.
Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
Prepare the salted caramel sauce by melting the granulated sugar over medium heat until golden amber. Add the butter and stir until melted. Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring until smooth, then add the sea salt.
Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
Drizzle the warm salted caramel sauce over the crisp and serve.
