Funnel cake is a nostalgic treat that brings to mind the sights and sounds of summer fairs and carnivals. This homemade funnel cake recipe captures that magic, allowing you to enjoy this classic dessert without having to wait for the next fair to roll around. With its crispy exterior and fluffy interior, topped generously with powdered sugar, funnel cake is an indulgent snack that can easily be made at home.
Ingredients
Scale:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Optional: chocolate syrup, whipped cream, or fresh fruit (such as strawberries or bananas)
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until well mixed.
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then add the milk and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
In a deep fryer or a large pot, heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).
Once the oil is hot, pour the batter into a funnel or squeeze bottle with a small opening.
Drizzle the batter into the hot oil in a circular pattern, creating a lattice shape. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown on one side.
Carefully flip the funnel cake using tongs and fry for an additional 1-2 minutes until golden brown on the other side.
Remove the funnel cake from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Dust generously with powdered sugar while still warm, and add any optional toppings if desired.
